15 great and simple techniques for cleaning silver at home
Silver coins, jewelry, and silver cutlery lose their luster over time and even turn black. This tarnishing is the result of a chemical reaction of silver and sulfur in the air. Most jewelry and accessories today are coated with a very thin layer of rhodium to protect the metal and make it brighter. However, this thin protective coating is erased, which allows the silver items to turn black easily.
In fact, silver products react not only with sulfur in the air. Perfumes, cosmetics, hair sprays, hand creams, skin oils, and even certain products can cause metal to fade and lose its luster and shine. Fortunately, there are several simple and inexpensive ways to remove tarnishing, polish and clean silver.
Here are 15 recipes for easy cleaning of silver with your own hands at home:
    METHOD 1.
The fastest and most reliable way to clean and polish silver products is a specialized cleaning agent - "MS SHINE". Only it will effortlessly clean, polish and restore the original appearance of heavily tarnished coins and other antique items, as well as silver-plated products.
    METHOD 2.
    Aluminum foil + washing powder
This technique is suitable for slightly tarnished silver or silver jewelry.
Line the bowl with aluminum foil and cover with hot water. Add a tablespoon of liquid laundry detergent and mix well. Drop the silver items inside and let them soak in for a minute. Remove the silver with kitchen tweezers, rinse with warm water, and place it on a paper towel to allow the items to dry.
    METHOD 3.
    Aluminum foil + baking soda
This is one of the best recipes in our arsenal for cleaning silver.
An aluminum soda bath is very useful when you need to clean several things or larger items such as silver cutlery, candlesticks, or cutlery. Cover the bottom of a large baking dish with aluminum foil, shiny side up. Use a ceramic or glass baking dish, rather than a metal one, to avoid unwanted chemical reactions. Fill with water and add baking soda. You will need 1.5 tablespoons of soda for every 3 liters of water. Bring to the boil and put the tarnished silver on for 15 seconds. Remove the silver with kitchen tongs. Leave the silverware on a paper towel to cool. All the fading is gone. If persistent plaque accumulates, you may need to repeat the procedure.
Never use this recipe for jewelry with inlaid precious stones.
    METHOD 4.
    Corn flour + water
If your silver has lost its luster, this recipe will help you restore it. Prepare a thick paste of water-based cornstarch and apply it to the silver product. Allow the mixture to dry completely and wipe the item with a towel to Polish the surface and restore the luster to coins, Antiques, jewelry, and silverware.
If you run out of cornstarch, you can replace it with tartar.
    METHOD 4.
    Cleaning with ketchup
This may sound strange, but ketchup is great if you need to remove the tarnish from the silver.
This method is useful if you only need to clean 1-2 small silver items.
Squeeze a few drops of ketchup onto a paper towel and gently wipe off tarnished silverware or jewelry. If there is an old, tarnished plaque, apply ketchup directly to these areas and leave for 15 minutes. Then wipe with a microfiber cloth and rinse with water. Coins, as well as some items, such as unusual candlesticks or silverware, have a three-dimensional surface. Use a soft toothbrush to reach between the crevices and remove plaque.
    METHOD 6.
    Hand sanitizer
Hand sanitizers are a quick solution if you need to Polish a silver ring or coin on the go.
Squeeze a small amount of hand sanitizer onto a soft paper handkerchief and gently wipe the jewelry. Mat and light plaque will quickly be erased, and your silver will be clean and shiny again!
Do not try this recipe on jewelry with inlaid mineral stones, because some ingredients of hand sanitizer can damage the stone.
    METHOD 7.
    Toothpaste
This is a classic and simple recipe for cleaning silver with your own hands.  Use non-gel and non-abrasive toothpaste.  Squeeze a small amount onto a soft cloth or paper handkerchief. Rub into coins, jewelry, or silverware in a circular motion to Polish them and remove plaque. Leave on for 5 minutes, then rinse off the toothpaste with water. After this procedure, the silver will be clean and shiny as new.
    METHOD 8.
    Lemon-lime soda water
If your silver jewelry has become opaque and tarnished, soak it in a plastic bowl filled with lemon-lemon soda. Leave it for an hour. When the time is up, remove the silver, rinse thoroughly with clean water, and dry with a paper towel or soft cloth.
This method only works for slightly tarnished silver items.
    METHOD 9.
    Coca-Cola
Cleans more tarnished silver, but this method is not very effective for old plaque.
Pour some Coca-Cola into a bowl and soak the decorations in it for 10 minutes-remove and wipe with a cloth.
When the time is up, remove the silver, rinse thoroughly with clean water, and dry with a paper towel or soft cloth.
    METHOD 10.
    Beer or vodka
Pour a cup of beer or vodka into a bowl and dip the decorations in it for 5-10 minutes. Remove and wipe with a cloth.
This method does not give perfect results, but it will definitely make the shade lighter.
    METHOD 11.
    Window cleaner
Window cleaner works great not only on glass surfaces, it really removes dirt and very beautifully restores the shine of sterling silver (the name of an alloy of 92.5 % silver and 7.5 % other metals, usually copper).
Spray a little on the cloth and start rubbing the silver items. Use a soft toothbrush to gently wipe small parts and jewelry.
Never use this recipe to process antique silver, such as cutlery, candlesticks, jewelry, or silver accessories - antiques can be very fragile.
If you need to clean antique silver, it is better to buy a specialized product "MS SHINE".
    METHOD 12.
    Ammonia + water
This is an easy way to decorate silver cutlery, jewelry and accessories. Prepare a solution of 1 part pure ammonia and 2 parts warm water. Soak the silverware in the liquid for 10 minutes. When the time has elapsed, remove them from the solution, wipe them with a soft cloth, and wipe them with a dry cotton cloth to polish the surface.
It is not recommended to use ammonia for processing antique silver products or silver jewelry.
    METHOD 13.
White distilled vinegar + baking soda
This recipe is not suitable for antique silverware.
However, it's a great way to bring back the sparkle and shine to your sterling silver jewelry and cutlery. Place the silver items in a bowl of suitable size and pour the white distilled vinegar over them. Add baking soda to the bowl - approximate proportions: 4 tablespoons of baking soda for each cup of vinegar. Leave the silver in the mixture for 1 hour. Wash off with clean water and dry well with a soft cotton cloth.
    METHOD 14.
    Baking soda + water
If you need to deal with the persistent raids on the silver jewelry and prepare a thick paste of baking soda and warm water. Apply it to faded spots with a damp cloth. Leave on for 2-3 minutes, then gently wipe with a soft cloth.
Do not rub too hard to avoid scratching the surface.
If there are small parts or cracks, wipe them with a soft toothbrush. Wash the jewelry with cold water and dry it with a soft cloth. Polish in a circular motion to polish the silver.
    METHOD 15.
    Further advice: Preventing tarnishing
Are you wondering if there is prevention of the cause of tarnish? Well, there are a few steps you can take to avoid a chemical reaction that causes a corrosive layer on your silver jewelry.
    • Gently rub a small amount of conditioner into the material and blend with a soft cloth. This polishes the silver and protects it.
    • Put the chalk in the box or drawer where your jewelry is stored. Chalk absorbs moisture from the air, essentially preventing the sulfur components from reaching silver.
    • Try to clean your jewelry regularly - regular cleaning protects it from discoloration.
    • Try not to swim in chlorinated pools or clean them with bleach or ammonia-containing products while wearing your silver jewelry.
    Summary
To sum up, there are two fantastic methods for cleaning silver jewelry: using baking soda and aluminum foil, and the second is using a silver cleaning solution such as "MS SHINE".
The products you get in the store are fantastic and produce amazing results, but they should only be used in the most difficult tarnishing situations. This type of product usually removes the silver layer, leaving you with a new silver surface. Fortunately for us, we can use our #1 method for cleaning jewelry, which is just as successful and less expensive.
After conducting this research experiment, we came to the conclusion that a white "silver cleaning" cloth is one of the best tools you could have for cleaning silver products. We didn't use this in the experiment, as we expect most people don't have them at home, however after some methods were tried and tested, we used a silver cleaning cloth to see if it helps remove the tarnish further. In some cases, it really mattered. Even after using baking soda and aluminum in the best way, you can use a silver cleaning cloth to give it extra Shine.
